I trust in Him.

November 4, 2006 · Leave a Comment

Whether you think I put to much trust in Him isn’t really an issue, right?!

Went to have dinner at Indochine, Asian Civilization Museum Waterfront this evening with my dad, and few of his colleagues and friends. It was my first time there and I thought it was nice place to have a meal or chill by the riverside. I prefer the Asian cuisine at the Indochine, Forbidden City though as the waterfront served mainly Vietnamese and western cuisine. Vietnamese food is nice, but not up there on my list of favourites.

I thought it was a lovely evening spent, drinking and eating. So full! For that few hours, I just forgot about my work and enjoyed the funny company. Sharing experiences of traveling to different places, looking for future opportunities for makan sessions again … next time should be Fuzhou cuisine at Singapura Restaurant. Have not been there for more than 2 years. The service delicious cold crab and a soup made from red wine, chicken and glass noodles. Yums!

I’m so focused on the 2 more months left. Doing that helps me to put the huge task of the report writing and the presentation and a few other side projects into a larger perspective and not make it all so scary. There is a certain motivation that drives me on. Got my comments from my Prof about my draft report. He said, “I think you need to use more computer and IT related terms in your report.” and also “I think you have most of the details there, but you are lacking the overview and the other glue to make the report come together.”

Ok, so lots of work for the weekend, but hey, 2 more months — in fact — 2 more weeks to submission of report. haha!

It’s late, hope everyone has nice, sweet dreams. Nites!

Full AGAIN just before bed time

October 22, 2006 · Leave a Comment

I am full from food and drinks again, just when I am about to go to bed.
I think I am going to be a PIG very soon. It’s not so much the amount of food that I am eating, but the food that I am eating at very weird hours of the day. On normal days, I have like late lunch at 3 pm, then late dinner at 8 pm and I am still full by the time night falls.

Well, …

Before I left for church this afternoon, I thought I had found another BUG in my program for HYP. I was so fustrated. I tried to fix the bug, revert the code, etc … and I could not fix it. On my way to church while I was walking somewhere between Serene Centre and church, the solution HIT me. I had forgotten to switch 2 lines of code back to the test version. That was why results were so different.

At least now I got that out of the day.

Deepavali lunch tmr. Should I go? (it’s all the way at tanah merah! … and it’s like 4 am now … faints!)

Very full from Mellben

October 20, 2006 · Leave a Comment

It was crab night!

Alot of crab! It was crab “buffet” for dinner in fact. 4 huge crabs + a couple of other side dishes for 6 people.

Devoured crab

It was a case of too much food being ordered for a smaller than intended group of people. (Emptied my wallet for that bill … haha!) Oh well … Thanks to those who came. Hope you all enjoyed the dinner as much as I did!

Shall not be bothered about those who did not turn up for whatever reasons. Reasons are a plenty, people just pluck one from the sky and serve it around as an appetizer for random selection. (Shall not go into a lengthy debate on my pov here, since it’s clearly not value adding to me in any way.)

The shop earns alot of money! The tank of crab was full on arrival. Upon departure, the tank was near empty.

I’m so FULL, again! (Tmr need to cut back!)

Take note of address: Mellben Seafood, 232 Ang Mo Kio Ave 3, near Mayflower Sec School.

Food of notable taste: The Crab bee hoon soup, the butter crab and the stir fried sweet potato leaves with Tau Lu. Other versions of crab are normal.

Emailed my ISP recently for some “feedback” and they GOT my feedback. Hope they actually do something about it. I’ll be “watching” them. >

Assignment 1 for this module is done. Finally!

Took such a long time to get it done because of the lack of familiarity of the software used and all the bugs in the software which only caters for a certain usage pattern. Obviously, we overlooked it, considering how lacking the online documentation was.

At least that’s done.

Now, I can focus on my Compiler project and my HYP. Both of which requires intense work and loads of sleepless nights. ** yawns **

It’s Mid Autumn soon! Moon Cakes are everywhere. Was at Tiong Bahru plaza waiting for my mum and I tried the mooncakes available. Still prefer the tradtitional flavours like lotus paste and yam compared to lemon orange or orange or mango flavours.

Got a box of Bengawan Solo mooncake consisting of lotus paste and yam. Get yours now, 1 box (of any combination) has 10% discount. Saw the Teochew yam mooncake sold by Holiday Inn, but didn’t get it cos’ they only sold in boxes of 4 and I cannot finish that all by myself.

This afternoons’ RAS group meeting was a disaster. The main talk was so confusing. Barely understood what was going on and I’m glad my Prof decided to ask the guy the reorganize his slides and do up his presentation again for a future session. (and yes, doing animation in ppt takes a very very very very loooooong time, but it really helps in uderstanding … so thanks to my prof for pointing that out.)

Good night, need to get rid of some eyebags, if not I will have no more eyes and only the bags!

The Forbidden City – A portrait of an Empress

September 10, 2006 · Leave a Comment

Kit Chan

Went to watch the Forbidden City yesterday afternoon. It was a matinee show, but the theatre was packed. Everyone was there to support the local art scence?!

The performance was good. The set was quite innovative to potray the majestic past, and the costumes were quite real. Some singers needed to improve their diction though, as there was some slight slur that made it difficult to hear exactly what they were singing. I had to refer to “Chinese Subtitles” every once in a while to get the right meaning. Haha! The score and music of the whole musical was plain musical style. No great break through and no really memorable tunes.

What I did like about the show was that it brought a human side to the Empress Cixi. The show wanted to bring out the female side and human side of the Empress which was contrary to all the “facts” that we have been fed about her ambition, her power hunger, her cruelty, her insincerity and her immorality by “kiling her son”. (well, I dun think she really killed her son, it’s a mother’s instinct thing to not do so, right?)

So, 2 thumbs up for the show, nonetheless.

After the show, ended up at Imperial kitchen for dinner at Marina Square. They served alot of shanghainese dishes. Quite expensive too, considering that the prices were Singapore equivalent of Chinese prices. A bowl of la mian cost S$6, which is equals to the price numerically in China RMB 6. Food was good, especially the fu yong egg with crab meat and dried scallop.

And after shopping for my mouse, I got dessert. ok … need to do something about it tmr … Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream (which I think is quite expensive!) 3 scops of ice cream in a waffle bowl cost a whopping S$12.50.

and the day was good. (I’m learning this from friends or friends’ friends…

Thank God for the MacBook!
Thank God for the beautiful musical – Forbidden City.
Thank God for mum that sponsors part of the cost of the musical.
Thank God for friends to watch the msical with and have dinner with.
Thank God for it all.

Have a great week ahead!

That’s my McDonalds!

September 7, 2006 · Leave a Comment

I grew up with that tagline.

It was a familiar tune with a familiar phrase. It has, in recent year, been replaced by the more catchy, more updated, more groovy tagline “I’m lovin’ it!”

I persuaded my friend to have lunch with me at McDonalds this afternoon as I missed having a value meal at the fast food chain. I had my usual Fillet O Fish meal. The fish fillet was piping hot (fresh from the frier) and the fries were too. I haven’t had a McDonalds meal since May 1. That was the eve of my last exam paper last semester. (ok, too much details!)

So, I was thinking … I liked the groovy new brand. Wang Lee Hom sings the mandarin version and his picture is plastered over all Mcdonalds’ outlet in China. In Singapore, I don’t think they have a spokesperson for it, but it’s still a catchy tagline that gets into people’s minds.

BUT … I do remininsce the old phrase. It was a simple 1 liner usually read by a little kid in the most innocent fashion. (The good ol’ days!)

and so, I bought my Mac, ate my Mac, ordered my Mac … all in a single day! (“,)

I’m lovin’ it!

Fillet O Fish  I'm lovin' it!

p.s. After this evening career talk by the world’s largest energy company, I can safely rule ou Engineering as a career. (Well, I never did kid myself with that option to begin with.)

Marketing and Siew Mai

September 5, 2006 · Leave a Comment

There really isn’t a correlation, unless we consider marketing siew mai or buying siew mai (think going to the ‘market’ to do ‘marketing’ for siew mai) Anyhow, I jest!

Was in school the good part of the day for the RAS group meeting and I was lost in the session on peptide sequencing. Not my cup of tea and not my area of research, so was totally lost during Max’s talk, even though it was quite a good presentation.

Went to YIH IT Co-Op this morning to pick up the form for the Laptop 2nd purchase. Yea! I think I shall place order on Thursday. Need any more 2nd thoughts?! hmm …

Also went to the Forum Co-Op after all the meetings and “gossip” session and found yet another book. Alright, I’m still in the midst of my other book – and it is a good book, with good insights, but I couldn’t resist this other book, since it was like a steal. It was a good summary of alot of marketing books. It would be like reading 1 book but in fact reading books from 10 different very well established and famous authors.

I present: The Marketing Guru

The Marketing Guru

Reviews of the book shall have to wait, while I balance all my readings … will make it through all of them, but it’s a case of slowly and stedily!

So, finally back to my topic. I wanted to eat Siew Mai and so … I did a little extra stuff for the main dish.

Presenting: Chilled Linguine in Soba sauce on top of boiled Asparagus and served with Siew Mai

Not fancy enough for you!? Who cares!

满福圆

August 29, 2006 · Leave a Comment

Had dinner at Intercontinental Hotel’s chinese restaurant 满福圆. The food was good! (Even though the fish was not cooked properly … some parts weren’t cooked.)

A cantonese restaurant, but the food had a good variety. I ordered 2 appetizers, Drunken Chicken and Fried Perch with lime sauce, expecting it to be as it’s name suggested appetizers or 冷菜 but the food was hot and simply appetizer sized. Oh well!

One interesting dish was asparagus with bamboo marrow and brocolli in broth. No pictures lah … and the dessert was Yam Paster (芋泥) with Almond cream sauce (Very different from the usual coconut milk or just milk.

Why the dinner?

Well, my brother is leaving for Canada. He finally got his VISA and he would be leaving by the end of the week. So, it’s a farewell dinner for my brother from my dad.

Bye bye, Kennie! (Though I still have a couple of more days to keep saying that … hahaha!)

Kennie’s leaving! Lalilalilala!!! haha!!! (ok … kiddings!)

Mee Soto, Soto Ayam & Me

August 28, 2006 · Leave a Comment

Mee Soto Soto Ayam
Alamak!

I really cannot differentiate all the Malay Delicacies! Jialat! Besides the usual Nasi Lemak, Mee Siam, Mee Rebus, and Mee Soto, all other forms of Malay food eludes me.

What Soto Ayam? What Soto Nasi?

There were too much choices on the board and most of them did not ring a bell. I wanted to try the stall, cos’ it happened to be open and it happened not to have a queue (as it normally would). I asked for Soto Ayam. (In fact, I asked what soto ayam was, and got a reply saying only Mee Soto left.) So, without getting my reply, I ordered a bowl of Mee Soto for $2 (only). (I really did not want to continually pester that young lady at the stall. She looked tired and was too can’t be bothered with what I was asking.)

The bowl of Mee Soto, was good! The chilli was superb! It was HOT! BUT, beware, it’s really a small small small small bowl of noodles!

Oh, before I forget, stall is at Adam Road, and the sign board is a bright red, stall to the left of the Mutton Soup Stall. (sorry lah, can’t remember the stall number.)

At the end of the day, what did I learn … erm … Mee Soto is actually Soto Ayam with Noodles and Soto Ayam is Mee Soto without noodles and with more chicken.

Now, correct me if I am wrong!

Liquor! Liquor! Liquor!

August 27, 2006 · Leave a Comment

My brother and I assisted my mum in cleaning out a few cupboards to catalog all the liquors that we had accumulated over the years.

Liquor

Aug 26, 2006 – 108 Photos

This is just one of the many bottles of hard liquor that we uncovered today. See the variations of liquors we have at the link above. Yet, this is not a full catalog of the list, cos’ for each type there are usually a couple of bottles.

We intend to sell it all off, since it’s rather useless to us. I could stay drunk for the rest of the year with the amount of liquor present. (Kidding!) Anyone interested or knows people interested, can drop me a msg. Please quote a reasonable price. Some are really vintage liquours that have been aged for a long long time!

It’s the beginning of Week 3 for the school term.
Time is flying by very quickly.
I like that!
