the real thing

March 31, 2006 · Leave a Comment

I finally got the real thing. The real Teva Sandals. In fact, its my first real TEVA sandals. If you thought the one I was wearing previously was real, think again. I am a great supporter of the Chinese economy and have been patronizing their stalls numerous times over the past few years. I am proud to have finally discard my “chiong” TEVA sandals which I got from Beijing 4 years ago for RMB 90. (“,) The new and improved Teva cost a whopping S$83. I guess, quality should not be compromised.

The Katong Laksa at Queensway is really good! Go try it!

Anyway, so full again tonight. Good food is good! Now to start working on waistline reduction. I don’t want to start changing wardrobe liao …

Ok, next week is a tough and busy week.

1. CS3230 Quiz 4 on Thursday
2. CS3230 Assignment Due Thursday
3. EE2009 CA 2 on Saturday
4. CS3211 Assignment due 10 April
5. Exams in 2 weeks time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That was what I was most shocked about. I’m still struggling to finish my assignments leh! Why you all start with exams liao. No time leh!!! sighs! Which I had more time! Why? Cos’ there are so many other things to do. Thought of another great idea this afternoon. Of course, must thank Fionna for inspiring the thought and helping think through the idea. Its a feasible idea, but I need to work out costing before I can say for certain. Time?! Holidays coming, then will start getting to work! NOC-ians, I expect you all to help me, hor, if I really go through with it. (yes, mr. mq … you cannot give me any excuse. hahaha) (“,)

Ok, back to studying …

the executive golf course

March 29, 2006 · Leave a Comment

Had the course section of our golf lesson this morning. Arrived in the morning with mq, fionna and thanks to mq’s dad for the lift. The game was as expected since we weren’t really good yet and we were all so kan jiong. Well, at least, I was and so I was hitting the ball (literally hitting) the ball into the fences, the drains, the distant drains and the trees. I just wasn’t too good at hitting the ball in the right direction. Many times, I went out into difficult terrain, sand bunker, trees (where I hit the ball and it rebounded back towards my direction again after hitting another tree), drains (where it also repeatedly rebounded back to me). In general, I was glad at least that my putting skills have improved. I manage to put with lesser shots. Overall, this game simply revealed the beginner standard we all were in. So, practise practise and practise. Must find time to go and practise lah … (but sooo far … sians!)

Went to Old Thomson after the game to eat Prata. I could not find the prata shop I liked the last time my dad brought me. So we ended up at some quite renovated curry house. Also not that bad, but I so over ordered thinking the size of the prata would not be so huge! It was!

Ubin Seafood @ 6th avenue. Not too bad food there. Thanks to Fionna who introduced that placed, cos’ of her friend working there. Seafood is not cheap in Singapore, but I guess its only in Singapore where you can really get REAL Black Pepper Crab as well as the Chilli Crab. (I want to go back GZ to eat, shop and eat and shop … sighs!)

Back to work, exams are in a month time and I am still so lost! Lost! … more Lost than the people in the season of Lost 2 (which I really do not watch and wonder what the hype is all about.)

Ok, decisions are becoming clearer and more precise. I honestly believe that when I don’t think about it, it becomes more evident. So much clearer. (“,)

Business Etiquette

March 29, 2006 · Leave a Comment

Attended a course on business etiquette on Tuesday afternoon with Elaine and Fionna. It was a great session and the consultant – Ms Marion Teo – was great with dishing out advice and tips for everyone.

Some general tips for a networking session.

1. Start the greeting with a “Good Afternoon” or “Good evening”. “Hi” or “Hello” are considered informal and not appropriate at formal settings.

2. Always introduce yourself using your full name. i.e. Good afternoon, my name is Edwin Ting. (not simply Edwin). Always include your given name and your family name. Never put a Mr. or Ms in front of your name as it implies superiority which is a big no no for asian culture.

3. Only shake hands after the greeting. It usually happens after both parties have introduced their names and not both party are about to say: Nice to mee you. That would be the cue to shake hands.

4. Shake a firm handshake. Never shake with sweaty palms. Hold a handkerchief in your other hand and dab on it occasionally to dry your hands. You never want to be caught in a situation when you have to shake a hand and you start rubbing it all over your pants.

5. Guys should take their name cards out from their shirt pocket. Ladies out of the purse. Never take it out from below the waist level. Its considered rude. Ladies, lift your purse up to above the waist then take out the card holder, which was placed at a location readily accessible.

6. As usual use 2 hands to give the name card with words facing the receiver.

7. Guys stand on 2 feet and not 1. Roughly shoulders width apart and hands by your side or at the back. Do not put your hands fingers crossed right in front of the crotch area. Ladies stand with poise, possibly 1 leg infront of the other aka model, or just stand on 2 feet with knees and legs close to each other.

8. Stand at arms length from the person. We do not want to invade other people’s personal space.

A little on interview tips.

1. Knock on the door (if its close) before you enter the interview room.

2. Enter the room and close the door without turning your back towards the panel of interviewees.

3. Either stand there and make an introduction then walk up to the chair OR walk up to your chair and introduce yourself. Pick one that suits your style and something that will show your confidence.

4. Never sit down till the interviewer invites you to. Sit down without breaking eye contact with the interviewer.

5. Don’t fidget!

6. Rest your hands on your tighs as that will be the position that prevent you from fidgetting too much.

7. Always make eye contact.

8. When leaving, walk to the door, BUT when you walk out of the room, face the interviewers and walk out. Do not walk out with your back towards them.

What is an appropriate formal attire?

Guys:
1. Suits should be matching with pants. i.e. colour, shade, materials should all be matching for it to be considered formal.

2. Tie should be of a lighter colour than pants.

3. colour of the belt should be the same as the shoe

4. colour of socks should be the same as the shoe

5. never half more than 5 accessories (ear rings, watch, cuff links, tie clips, etc.)

6. Clean finger nails (and no long ones)

Ladies:
1. Wear covered shoes. (or at least court shoe type of styles)

2. Wear a decent blouse under a jacket suit. In case there are reasons to take off the jacket.

3. never have more than 8 accessories (ear rings, necklace, etc)

4. Use colour appropriately.

5. Fingernails should not be more than 1 cm. Colouring is ok, as long as its not chipped.

6. stockings are necessary anymore.

Hmm … alot more pointers, but as I wasn’t paying so close attention to ladies stuff, I think I left out a number of stuff.

Perhaps ladies who were there can add on??!?!

And so, for an unproductive day, I learnt alot.!

Since that session took up 2 of my tutorials, I went to find my CS3230 professor after 4 pm to discuss the tutorial. He gave me a personal session in his office. (“,) Not bad, I think I got the materials covered. Afterall, I was the only want he was talking to. He even prgrammed right on the spot to let me see certain examples … hahaha … ok .. he is a good lecturer!

advice can come from anyone and at anytime, I just have to listen carefully

March 28, 2006 · Leave a Comment

Its quite amazing! I was congragulating mq on his interview he got with his 2nd “dream” company and I thought about what exactly I was doing about my own job search and internship search. I was alittle lost as I had to weigh the possibilities of juggling both my attachment with my HYP company as well as an Internship company, should I take up one.

On my way to meet my professor, I was walking up the steps and suddenly I stopped right in the middle of a flight of stairs and said a prayer. I prayed that God will let me know what I should do about my internship. I was afraid of being overloaded. I was scared of taking on too much. I was tired of working even through the holidays. Yet, I was excited about trying out new things. I wanted to go do “real stuff” again as oppose to doing “school work”. It was a huge dilemma.

The advice came in the most unexpected form – my HYP professor.

He wasn’t too keen on me taking up another internship. Initially, I was alittle defensive and wanted to argue my point. Yet, the conversation we had let me realized that at this stage it might not be important or relevant to do an internship. He said,”Judging from your current profile, I don’t think you need another internship.” After your 1 year internship, which is like a super internship, what’s another internship for 2 months? He suggested I ask the HYP company to perhaps extend the attachment period and I can treat that as an internship as well as an opportunity to work on my HYP on site. With that situation, I get to kill 2 birds with 1 stone (3 in fact!) and possibly deliver a better system to the company. (the other bird is that I get to take a breather in the holidays and I can travel … (“,) … ok!!! hahaha!)

So, I am happy that I got this off my mind. 1 thing crossed out and its really a relief. That’s why I say that God speaks to us in such mysterious ways. He speaks to me when I least expect it. He informs me through the least expected messenger. He conveys the message in weridest circumstances. I am confounded and in awe.

As what my friend elkan placed in his msn nick one day: Seek first the Kingdom of God, and all shall be in place.

There is nothing to lose in believing. Yet, there is so much to gain.
Believe me!
Believe Him!

Psalm 63 :: My First Bible Phrase for Year 2006

March 26, 2006 · Leave a Comment

A psalm by David.

O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you;
my soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you,
in a dry and weary land where there is no water.

I have seen you in the sanctuary
and beheld your power and your glory.

Because your love is better than life,
my lips will glorify you.

I will praise you as long as I live,
and in your name I will lift up my hands.

My soul will be satisfied as with the richest of foods;
with singing lips my mouth will praise you.

On my bed I remember you;
I think of you through the watches of the night.

Because you are my help,
I sing in the shadow of your wings.

My soul clings to you;
your right hand upholds me.

They who seek my life will be destroyed;
they will go down to the depths of the earth.

They will be given over to sword
and become food for the jackals.

But the king will rejoice in God;
all who swear by God’s name will praise him,
while the mouths of liars will be silenced.

you busy, i busy, everybody busy busy

March 26, 2006 · Leave a Comment

I seem to be competing with my mum on being busy. She is busy from office work, council work, pap work, etc. I am busy with school work, projects, etc. In general, I think we also compete on who can come back later every night. Or who will not be home more often.

Guess its good in a way. Cos’ I don’t have to so concerned that I am not at home. As in, if she is not at home, then I wouldn’t need to be concern if she was home alone and can handle herself properly. I guess, its a vice versa situation. If I am not home that often, then she souldn’t be worried or upset about being away from home so often and leaving me home alone.

p.s. Anyone knows whether I can get a free version of the NIV Bible for Palm OS anyway where? OK, I am a cheap skate! My KJV is really too arcane for my liking.

my eyes are alittle blurry

March 25, 2006 · Leave a Comment

oh shit!

Think I stayed up way woo much liao. Or maybe I was concentrating too hard!

I finally got my Fujitsu Laptop up and running with my newly installed 80GB HDD which I recently got to change the old one which was only 30GB and so very full. Almost all my programs have been re installed.

Along the way, as usual, there will always be some hiccups. One of my Ext HDD did not work. Lucky I had the original copy in the HDD which I took out from my laptop. So, the back up did not work. Phew! It never fails to happen. Everytime I reinstall my laptop with Windows, something will go wrong and make me take even longer to rectify the problem.

I shall continue when the sun rises again later on … my eyes refuses to stay open and its beginnging to look blurry all around … scared, I lose my Perfect Eyesight … (“,)

believes and actions

March 24, 2006 · Leave a Comment

紧紧听,我要紧紧听,我要专心听主的声。

I think I got the translation right for this phrase of the Hokkien Christian Song. Its lovely. Couldn’t really figure out the rest of the words, so I could not type it out. Being spiritual is something so innate in a person.

Its about ME! Its about how I FEEL! Its about what I LIVE!

Yes, no?!

Religion (or Christianity in this case) is really about HIM. God. The Lord. Our Heavenly Father. When I acknowledge that its all about HIM and that we do everything for HIM and his glory, I will lead the life that has been best laid out for me. (I speak in first person, but it applies to everyone.)

I agree with people Christianity is not just about adknoeledging God. Its about believing and translating that believe into something tangible. To grow as a Christian would be what I have been told.

I also agree that going to Church is not something we do like a chore, or do out of a necessity. It has to be a want. Something that I want to do, so the motivation must come from within me. By doing so, then I will be going there for the right reasons.

it takes typically 5 years in the development phase before you become familiar with the product

March 20, 2006 · Leave a Comment

I want to get into IT consultancy, but having have to go through 5 years of software development before I can “graduate” on to other areas such as Marketing or Consultancy is way too long. I really do not mind the initial grounding in IT if that phase could be over within a year. I am not cut out for software development. I know myself. Also, I do not really need to be coding and developing softwares for 5 years before I can gain enough knowledge of IT to apply it properly in the client’s domain, right? Although I have not lost all hope in that company, I have diminished faith in the prospect of my career with them. However, I will try for it and see how we can negotiate something if I get an interview.

I really picking at every means. Everybody I know, Everybody I do not know, I link and link and link to find some connection to the companies that I might have interest in. Its not all about the money. Its about being able to do what I want to do, being able to go places, being able to develop with the company, being able to grow intellectually, being able to advance in the company. These are all the factors that I consider when I even evaluate if I want to try for a particular company. Ask me about the renumeration package and I say, “Its negotiable, both ways.” See, I’m open!

If nothing, I got something out of this afternoon’s Graduates’ Tea. I got a name and I hope it leads me somewhere.

Unlike that other something. I thought I knew where it was going, then once again I am not too sure. I’m taking a Signals Course (oh my!), why can’t I just see a sign (or signal) that will lead me in the right direction. (That’s for failing the Signals Mid-Term.) Maybe, just maybe, I might stumble or fumble into whatever it is, like everything else that I do, then I wouldn’t need to bother that much.

HYP – I finally started on my Project Plan. I am overwhelmed by how I should go about that plan. Hmm … Apply project management 101 … I’m sure I can make this happen. This ain’t the first Software Development Plan that I am doing.

These are definitely the moments in NUS that I will remember for the rest of my life.
